Tips for Tech Users

It’s estimated that almost 60% of the global population uses the Internet with the majority of  users accessing the Internet through mobile devices. PCs and mobile devices aren’t made to last forever but if you take care of your device chances are that you’ll be able to keep it running for a longer period of time.

Some of the most important tips include:

Battery

Cellphone manufacturers say that it’s not good for your phone’s battery to leave it at full charge for prolonged periods of time. Both iPhone and Android phone manufacturers advise users to keep their battery level close to the middle (30% to 70%) to prolong battery life.

Don’t let your battery wind down to below 20% if you can help it but don’t keep the charger in all night either.  The battery automatically stops charging when it’s full but when it charges for hours, it fluctuates between 99% and 100% and that constant cycle eats away at the battery’s lifespan.

There are other things that you can do to extend your device’s battery’s life as well. Check out the Battery section (Settings) to see what your manufacturer has to offer.

Check out an inexpensive auto shut-off timer that prevents your phone (tablet or laptop) from overcharging by turning the electricity off once you hit a specific level. The less daily wear and tear, the longer your battery will last in the long run.

There are other things that you can do to ensure that your phone’s battery lasts for as long as possible. Follow your device’s manufacturer guidelines to keep your phone working for longer. These instructions may include:

  • charge your phone before the battery completely runs out
  • let your phone’s battery fully run down periodically
  • restart your phone every once in a while
  • turn off services you don’t need (if you have WiFi access, turn off the mobile data, turn off live wallpaper, etc)
  • keep the battery cool (including turning off the phone if it overheats to let it cool down)

Cases and Screen Protectors

Make sure that your phone is safely nestled inside a case. Even the most careful user can drop a phone and once the screen shatters, there’s no guarantee that it will be fixable. The best way to protect your phone from falls is with a case. A simple sleeve usually works but you can also get something sturdier.

While you’re shopping, pick up a screen protector. Some cell phones have screens made of tough material so you don’t need them but if your phone isn’t one of the stronger models, it’s a good idea to have a screen protector that keeps the screen together in case the phone is dropped. A screen protector also prevents the screen from getting scratched which can affect how it responds to finger swipe commands.

Storage

Be careful about where you store your phone. As mentioned, if you scratch the screen, it can impair the function of the touchscreen. Therefore, unless the phone is in a case, don’t put it near pens or keys in a purse or pocket. Keep the device out of hot areas and especially out of direct sunlight. The heat from the sun will damage an LCD screen while the ultraviolet rays will cause the chemicals in the LCD to deteriorate which will shorten the life of your screen.

Clean

Dust can get into your device which will impact on your device’s performance. You can use a soft cloth that is sold for screen-cleaning to wipe your screen whenever you see that it is getting dusty. Every once in awhile, you should open the case and wipe down the phone/table/laptop.

Apps

Keep your apps updated. Most devices have apps that are installed by the manufacturer. By disabling or uninstalling apps that you don’t use, you’ll expand your battery life and free up your phone space. Apps that you want to keep should always be updated to the last version. When you get a message from an app that indicates that a new update is available, go ahead and update. The new updates can also guard against security threats and malware.

Most importantly, install only apps from trusted app stores such as Apple Play, Google Play, Amazon Store, etc.

Cache

Apps that you have installed may leave junk files in the cache.

When you install apps or when they run, they may leave junk files behind in the cache. Those take up memory you could use for things you really want to do. Clear these files out from time to time. Both Android and iOS allow you to do this and provide tools through their “settings” that guide you to clear your cache.

Storage

Expanding your storage can be a good investment because it frees up the phone’s internal memory which results in better performance. Not all phones allow you to install an external SD card but if your phone has this feature, take advantage of it because you’ll be able to run apps from the storage.

Security

Most phones have some type of security features built into the device. Use them!

  • Lock your phone with a password, pin, pattern or facial recognition if your phone has that feature.
  • Don’t choose an easy password or share it.
  • Install a security app so you can trace your phone if it gets lost or stolen.
