An innovative tool may be able to detect many types of cancer quickly with just a small drop of blood. Some types like ovarian cancer usually stay undetected until it’s too advanced for treatment to be effective, but researchers from the University of Kansas have developed an ultra-sensitive cancer-detective chip device.

This ground-breaking device is called “3D-nanopatterned microfluidic chip” and it detects cancer by filtering for microscopic vesicles that some eukaryotic cells produce, called exosomes. Exosomes contain biological information that can direct tumor growth and spread effectively, and while all cells produce these vesicles, tumor cells are really active as opposed to normal cells.

It works by draining the liquid when particles are moving closer to the sensor surface with a nonporous structure. Then, the particles get in contact with the surface where probes can recognize and capture the exosomes.

One of the best features of this device is how easy it is to make, as well as being cheap to produce. Soon, millions of patients will be able to test themselves in order to diagnose tumors and cancer prematurely. The 3-D nanoatterning method is also very adaptable, which allows researchers to use it to diagnose many different forms of cancer, as well as other diseases.

With medical innovations like this, we can finally see a brighter future in regard to cancer and many other diseases that can help people around the world have a better life.

Real effective actions to combat the environmental crisis

As featured on Sloto Magazine

The fact is indisputable; our planet is in trouble. In early 2019, the UN released two condemning reports that surveyed vast amounts of scientific literature to confirm what we already suspected: human actions are affecting the climate and are destroying the biosphere.

The first report, from March this year, says we have 11 years to save the planet, and the second, from May, indicates that one million animal species are threatened with extinction. It is time for us to take action against the impending catastrophe. Here are some simple but effective actions that can contribute to a better world.

  • Stop upgrading your mobile phone too often

Manufacturing a phone generates 16 kg of emissions, not counting the power it consumes while you use it. Furthermore, the raw materials to make the phone are precious: copper, lead, gold, silver, palladium, as well as glass and plastic. Hold on to your phone as long as you can to save on emissions and extensive consumption of natural resources.

  • Eat locally and less meat, if possible

Food production takes a huge toll on the environment. From pesticides to transportation of goods, from packaging to food waste, from deforestation for livestock farming to water scarcity due to water use for livestock’s food production (corn, maize, etc.): here we have an industry that needs reformation. The easiest way you can contribute to the optimization of food production is to eat locally. Buy from your local providers and from your region, and also try to cut down on meat. Studies have shown that livestock production is one of the most destructive forces driving climate change. Be part of the change – the positive change!

Christmas is round the corner, which means winter has arrived and with it that itchy skin sensation. Don’t let winter rob you of your well-deserved joy!

Let’s take a look at a few tips on how to take care of your body during the harsh winter months.

Take lukewarm baths or showers

While it may be tempting to take a bath in real hot almost sizzling Jacuzzi like temperature water, you want to keep the water lukewarm as hot water strips your skin from its natural oils.

Exfoliate your skin

Removing dead skin cells and moisturizing to penetrate deeper into your skin is one of the most important things you can do for you body during wintertime. You can even try and put together your own homemade scrub with a few simple ingredients.

Try a lavender body scrub:

1/2 cup of coarse sea salt.

1/3 cup of grape seed oil

1 tablespoon of dried lavender.

16 drops of lavender essential oil.

Or, you can whip up a super simple coffee scrub:

1/4 cup raw sugar

1/4 cup ground coffee

1 tbsp. olive oil

2 tbsp. coconut oil

1 tbsp. sea salt

Take care of your face too

Your face will be screaming for extra pampering during winter. You also want to exfoliate this area at least 3 times a week. Plus, if you don’t have one already, it’s not a bad idea to purchase a night eye cream. The area around your eyes is real thin and needs extra care during the colder months of the year. You don’t want to look 15 years older in the upcoming Christmas parties, do you?

Don’t forget your sunscreen

Remember that while it may be cold outside, the sun is still shinning and those UV rays aren’t taking a vacation. Make sure you apply sunscreen daily, as the winter sun will still cause havoc on your skin.
