Mr. and Mrs. Sloto
The search for home
Mr. Sloto spent weeks in a rented workshop garage building a state-of-the-art sailboat, equipped with solar panels, an onboard greenhouse and wind-powered motor. When finished he blindfolded Mrs. Sloto and brought her to the garage. He opened the gate and viola, he removed the blinds and she saw a sparkling beauty of a boat!
Mrs. Sloto wondered out loud, “How will see move it to the sea?”
“Oh.” – was the only word coming out of Mr. Sloto’s mouth. “Well, I haven’t thought about that darling.” – Mr. Sloto confessed, feeling a little embarrassed.
They decided to spend the night sleeping inside the boat, rather than the hotel. They were listening to the radio when suddenly the music was interrupted by a major news announcement:
“ATTENTION CITIZENS OF CHERRYTOWN. EXTENSIVE RAINS, WIND AND SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS. MAJOR RISK OF FLOODING IN MOST URBAN AREAS.”
Mr. and Mrs. Sloto were shocked, but also slightly relieved they were sitting inside a boat. They left the garage door open just in case the flooding did occur. Late at night they drifted to ‘stand-by’ mode (robot’s sleep).
When to ‘woke up’ they were taken aback when they notice they were floating on water. The whole city was flooded and they were sailing past the main national bank. People were scrambling at the top of buildings and floating planks of wood. It was a major catastrophe!
“I think we have to postpone our travels; these people need us!” – said Mr. Sloto. Mrs. Sloto was in agreement. They sat down to work out an emergency rescue plan for the whole city…

The search for home
Mr. Sloto spent all of the winter looking for a new home. He wanted something special this time. A house that was environmentally friendly, with a minimalistic design. He was thinking “Less is more”.
But the search continued for many weeks and could not find the right solution. In the meantime, Mrs. Sloto was becoming restless living in a 2-star hotel. She had envisioned a life of adventure with Mr. Sloto and this lifestyle left much to be desired.
Mr. Sloto could sense time was running out. So he came up with a brilliant idea. If a new home was not manifesting anytime soon, he’ll make the road their home.
The question was, where and how would they travel? He wanted to remain fixed on his sustainable principles, leaving as little carbon footprint as they rode the highways or sailed the seas.
In February, he took Mrs. Sloto to a fine restaurant and gave her a small gift. When she unpacked it, she found a key glued to a world map. Mr. Sloto said: “This is our new home, Planet Earth”. Mrs. Sloto smiled; she knew exactly what this meant. They were going on a road trip, a journey full of adventure and unknown encounters.
Mr. Sloto said, “We are leaving on March 21st, the spring equinox. We have just a little over a month to plan our trip.”
And when spring came, they were ready…Mr. Sloto spent all of winter looking for a new home. He wanted something special this time. A house that was environmentally friendly, with a minimalistic design. He was thinking “Less is more”.

Mr. Sloto puts on his comfy robe. It’s 6.05 am on December 25th. O boy, how he loves Xmas. He can’t wait to see Mrs. Sloto face when she opens her big gift: a stainless steel dress!
And Mr. Sloto is also looking forward to his gifts. He’s seen Mrs. Sloto sneaking around the house. He knows she’s up to something. Will she get him a new scooter or could it be scuba gear for a long trip to Hawaii?
Mr. Sloto goes downstairs to light the candles on the Xmas tree; an old tradition he cherishes. Mrs. Sloto comes shortly after into the living room. “Oh, it’s so beautiful my dear!” she sighs with delight as she sees a sparkling green Xmas tree in the middle of the room.
“Merry Xmas” says Mr. Sloto and they embrace. Mrs. Sloto is eager to give him her gift. She picks up a very large box and hands it over to Mr. Sloto. Mr. Sloto thrilled, begins to remove the wrapping.
“It’s nothing big, Mr. Sloto, hope you like it”, says Mrs. Sloto.
Mr. Sloto unpacks it all and is taken aback: 10 oil cans, a few rolls of quarters and new tires for his feet. “You’ll be just like new for the New Year” says Mrs. Sloto.
Mr. Sloto slightly disappointed, feigns a smile and thanks his wife. Suddenly the ground starts shaking. A 7.1 magnitude earthquake is underway. The oil cans fall to the ground and splatter the entire room. The candles on the Xmas tree ignite the oil and a huge ball of fire emerges.
“Run!!!” screams Mr. Sloto as he gets a hold of Mrs. Sloto and pulls her out of the house.
By noon, their entire house is burnt down to ashes. Mr. and Mrs. Sloto in their morning attire are attended by firefighters.
“Well, that’s a Xmas to remember”, says humorously Mr. Sloto. Mrs. Sloto smiles and whispers into Mr. Sloto’s ear: “Our adventure has just begun.”
